Where can you get Sponge Bob, Spider Man, and The Bare Naked Ladies all in one spot? Why, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade of course! And this year’s line up will not disappoint. Balloons range from Kermit The Frog to Uncle Sam. You can expect color coordinated marching bands from schools around the country and an all-star line up including Andrea Bocelli, Ziggy Marley, and my personal favorite Barbie. The parade began in 1929 and for 82 years it has marched down Broadway. However due to newly constructed pedestrian areas around Times Square, the course has been changed. Whether or not this is a positive change remains to be seen, but I suggest you bring your map. The new route is as follows: The Parade will begin at 77th street and Central Park West, then curve around to Central Park South across to 7th avenue, travel down to 42nd street THEN it will proceed across 42nd street to 6th avenue where it will remain until 34th street at which time it will return to 7th avenue, ending at Herald Square. Then, the parade will do the hokey pokey. If you won’t be in town on Thanksgiving Day all are invited to watch the balloons getting inflated by Macy’s volunteers at The Natural Museum of History on the night before. The three-hour event begins at 9am EST and airs on NBC.

One "Hell" Of A Parade / By Cassidy Catanzaro

I’ll set the scene: It’s 1987, Halloween. My babysitter former Playboy Bunny, (the supper club not the magazine) decides there is nothing more educative than to take my young impressionable self to the annual New York City Halloween Parade. But first we’d need to make me look older. After rummaging through her closet she threw together an ensemble that was reminiscent of at worst, one of the Runaways, and at best, a young (very young) Pat Benatar. parade_1_400

I was trembling with excitement as we approached 6th avenue my eyes darting from side to side afraid to miss a thing, all the while keeping close watch on my caped guardian as she danced and flitted through the colorful celebration. Music was playing from every culture and genre. Costumes and puppets swirled about as far as the eye could see. Large bedazzled glamazons in four inch heels and 5 inch lashes smiled and waved like they’d been crowned Miss America. “Those are men” my babysitter announced as I stood frozen and staring. I was in complete awe. I soon realized that of course they were men, no women I knew had such low body fat. The best part was, we could actually be IN the parade. We got to Spring Street at 6:30 just in time to dance and march all the way to 21st with fellow masqueraders honoring the holiday by letting their freak flags fly. God I love this town. I don’t recall how the story ends or whether my Mom ever found out where we’d been. But I always took with me the memory of that magical night and the love of that parade. *(The 35th annual Village Halloween Parade officially starts at 7pm and travels up 6th avenue to 21st. If you want to get in on the action walk towards Spring and 6th around 6:30….we’ll be waiting for you.)
