Del Frisco’s: A Cut Above the Rest

E-mail Print PDF

Del_FriscosOne type of restaurant that NYC is famous for are Steak Houses.  Whether you are from out of town or live in NYC, chances are you have heard of one of the many steak houses that are located in this great city.  I’ve been lucky enough to eat at some of these fine and legendary establishments.  Some of my favorites are (in no particular order): Ben Benson’s, Keene’s, Old Homestead and Smith & Wollensky.

However, after this past week I have another to add to the list: Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House.

Located at 1221 Avenue of the Americas on 48th Street in the heart of Rockefeller Center, this place definitely lives up to its phenomenal reputation.  This was my first trip to Del Frisco’s and right away you notice the fantastic ambiance.  This restaurant resonates class.  The staff is both friendly and accommodating.  I made a reservation for three and when my party arrived, we were seated right away.  After ordering my standard Jack Daniels on the rocks, I noticed something very interesting on the menu and it had to do with The Bread: “Rip it, break it, just don't cut it with a knife.  The bread we serve is baked fresh daily and served piping hot to your table.”  I have never read this before on any other steak house menu and I thought it was both creative and unique.  And guess what?  I did not cut the bread with a knife and, yes, it was fresh, piping hot and delicious.

del_frisco.pngThe menu is filled with a list of mouth-watering steaks, fresh seafood and a variety of side dishes.  I recommend starting out with the Crab Cake, which is filled with fresh chunks of crab meat.  For your entrée you have to go with the Ribeye Steak. And for a side dish, the Macaroni & Cheese!  Yes, they have macaroni & cheese and it is awesome!  As for dessert, you will have to wait until I go to Del Frisco’s again for me to give my recommendation.  Unfortunately, after all that food plus three JD’s on the rocks, I had no room for dessert.

Del Frisco’s did not disappoint.  I am a firm believer that every NYC resident or visitor should try at least one steak house.  If you are looking for delicious cuisine, a great atmosphere and the excitement of Rockfeller Center, definitely take a trip to Del Frisco’s.  It is without a doubt a cut above the rest.

B & H Dairy

bhvegeAt B & H Dairy you’ll be served a perfectly cooked, cheesy, melty omelette served alongside home fries bursting with onions and spicy seasonings.  Not to mention the portion of fresh baked, buttery challah bread.  All this, for only five dollars.  Its an old New York menu with old New York prices.

When you walk into this East Village diner, it feels like you’ve been transported to an earlier era.  Most of the seating is at the counter.  The waiters/ chefs cook up all the food on griddles and under burners. There always seems to be an elderly patron sitting at the counter as well who reminds you how long B & H has been there.

B & H makes sure to keep everything traditional.  They cut their own potatoes for the home fries.  They squeeze their own juice for you when you order it.  But, the most amazing part is the freshly baked challah bread.  Its slightly sweet, plenty rich, and has an airy texture to it.  The bread itself is delicious, yet B & H also offers home baked challah French toast.  Its dense, sweet, savory, and impossible to put down.

If you’re ever on second avenue, then pop on into this diner.  You’ll get a delicious meal for around five dollars.  They specialize mostly on breakfast but they also have dinners and sandwiches.

Black Label Burger at Minetta Tavern

Black_Label_BurgerMuch has been written about Minetta Tavern’s ground-meat masterpiece—perhaps the year’s single most exciting new dish on a bun (and maybe the richest patty ever created). It’s expensive, but remarkably—given that there are no foie gras nuggets or truffles hidden inside—worth every penny.
